6 days until Pandora goes under anyways. New copyright royalty laws are going into effect on July 15th that'll start a 300% increase in royalty payments for internet radio stations (including Last.fm and Pandora) retroactive to January 2006.

In other words, they're going to owe a lot of money to record companies, and they're probably not going to be able to afford to pay it.

http://www.savenetradio.org/

a bill is in the house and senate to stop this from happening. Call your congressmen to make sure they're supporting the bill. The bill will instead make the royalty rates of internet radio the same as satellite radio, which will actually result in a decrease of the royalty payment rate from the one internet radio stations have to pay now.

But Dave, how will record companies survive if they aren't actively screwing the average music fan?

last.fm is based in london, although owned by cbs... i'm not quite sure how that all works, though. it's just as much a music tracking service as it is radio, and the whole social community thing...

poor pandora, i totally forgot about that legislation ::devasated:: fucking asshole record companies.

in other news, pandora played me a song and i really liked it and then there were previews on last.fm for the rest of the album and it's rather pretty and the album only costs like, seven or eight bucks including shipping so im'a buy it. Bang

Pandora introduced me to one artist I really like called popa chubby. If you like blues, I suggest checking him out.

Dear Pandora Visitor,

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for most listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

I tried using a proxy. It recognized me as being from the US (snicker snicker) but it wouldn't work. :/

Not really their fault, though.

Well, you could have tried more than one station. . . Wink For the most part I always get pretty good ones. For the most part.

So I've gotten back into this recently. I've noticed most of my stations are based off the same few things. Blues influences, Electric Rock Instrumentation, mild rhythmic syncopation, and minor key tonality.

It doesn't mention it, but many of them seem to have awesome bluesy guitar solos as well.
