So yeah, for fans of 1992's Don't Copy That Floppy, the ESA (now SIIA) is at it again...

They made a sequel.
Don't Copy That 2.

... still as clueless and bumbling as the original though. And the message got worse... the first one was like "Yo dog, don't copy that game 'cause you'll take money away from the people who made it."
Now it's like "Yo dog, don't copy that game 'cause we'll get the cops to put you and/or your mom in jail and rape you with brooms."

And why is id software going along with this? Piracy isn't hurting them one bit!
Especially since John Carmack open sources the 5-year-old game engines anyway!

It's still fucking hilarious that the rapper is named "DP."

I think that this new video is worse in terms of aesthetics and musicality. The original at least had (relatively) high production value (for its time and genre). This new shit looks like it's some shitty community college's Film-201 class project. You'd think that the SIIA could hire better talent. Or maybe unauthorized copying really is putting a major dent in the industry...

Now that I think about it:

Even more distressing is that the SIIA doesn't seem to get the actual joke about "Don't Copy That Floppy." It's not funny or interesting for the mere fact that it's old, and features now-silly-looking analog video graphics. Despite the best (?) intentions of the producers of this video, vintage stuff isn't automatically cool or ironic. Either it's the laziest kind of trendy marketing, or they're fucking morons. The only people who found it interesting are the current generation of software pirates, mocking this kind of boyscout tripe.

And why are Klingons even relevant again?

Shit, the meta-irony in this video isn't even self-conscious, which could have at least saved a bit of its credibility in the end.

Right, but they're targeting different people, here. The first one just told to your standard every day copier, even telling people they need multiple copies for multiple computers. The new video is much more focused and targets the biggest offenders. Basically, going against the bootleggers rather than making a big deal of the people who occasionally download something off Pirate Bay or Mininova or something. I think this is better than criminalizing the masses.

id CEO Todd Hollenshead is a very open critic of piracy.

What's even funnier is that the dude is like some kind of real-life super genius attorney.

"M.E. Hart, Attorney-at-Law
M.E. Hart, Vice President of Organizational Performance, combines his unique blend of training experience with his expertise as an attorney and professional actor, designing and delivering programs for Strategic Interactions, Inc. that are unmatched in the adult-learning field. Hart’s background in EEO law gives him an understanding of the complex legal aspects underlying many of SI’s programs, like Preventing Sexual Harassment and Diversity. As Vice President of Organizational Performance, Hart ensures the legal integrity of SI’s programs. He is also a certified coach in the Emotional Competency Inventory (EQ) and is certified in MBTI, FIRO-B and other assessment inventories. Hart received his Bachelor’s Degree in Russian Language and his Law Degree from University of Kentucky. Hart received a CPD Certificate in Senior Executive Leadership from Georgetown University. Prior to joining SI, he worked as an attorney and educational producer at the Federal Judicial Center. I think the concept of owning information and using it for profit, all the while using the power of the state to keep such a system in continuance, is fundamentally flawed because it relies on the foundational concept that everything should be a market commodity, even physical (not to mention easily reproducible) manifestations of abstractions like computer programs ... maaaan.

I think that's bullshit. The biggest and best games out there right now would never have had the chance to be made if such protections weren't in place.

These games take years to make and require a staff in the hundreds. In a market where information is free, it would be absolutely impossible for hundreds of people to get together to work on a singular piece of software for several years. These people need paychecks to survive.

Besides, do you really want people to be selling pornography of Mickey Mouse fucking Bugs Bunny up the ass?

While I see your point, that's probably the worst argument for copyright ever.

besides Rule 34 already exists.

Jeff and Casey tear this video a new one here... which leads to a discussion of copyright in general here.

And for the most part, I agree with them.
