NES was wildly successful, SNES was very successful, N64 was midly successful, GC was marginally successful(if you can call it that). Anybody else see a trend? Like that Nintendo should just concentrate on handhelds? _________________

Trends could always be longer than you think. Besides, after nintendo revived the game industry, more and more systems came out every year, going from a low, to a high, now to a low again. Who's to say that won't happen in reverse for nintendo. |

they probably aren't.
yet.
Sony and Microsoft stand to beat the pants off them eventually, though. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

Nintendo only makes video games. Sony and Microsoft have solid product lines in other markets, meaning that Sony and Microsoft can lose more money in the gaming market than Nintendo can.
Nintendo's hardware is traditionally inferior to the competition's, and the Revolution will be no exception.
Nintendo's only saving grace is its characters and game franchises.
Sony is slowly whittling away at Nintendo's game franchises by building up their own collection.
Nintendo's consoles are becoming less and less popular each generation.
They may have tried too hard to be innovative with the Revolution's controller. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

Who even said anything about financially? Obviously their handhelds sell enough to make money, and since GC is so cheap to produce, they're not -losing- money off it. Besides that, there's nothing to even compare Nintendo's finances to, as Sony and MS both have a lot of other sources of revunue, so it's impossible to show which company makes/loses more off of video games.
Doesn't change the fact that Nintendo's consoles are losing market share and, who knows, maybe the Revolution -won't- pay for its R&D...but that's money that's already been spent anyway, so don't expect Nintendo to stop producing the Revolution to make up for it. Or maybe the Revolution will break Nintendo's downhill spiral with consoles. If the Revolution does not recover its R&D cost in a timely fashion, the question then is, will Nintendo create a new console? Nintendo has hinted that the Revolution might be their last console, which shows that even they doubt whether the R&D cost will be recovered within a reasonable amount of time. Nintendo has also hinted that they will support the Revolution for a long time. Perhaps this is to offer them a chance to recover the money spent on R&D before beginning a new product cycle(if they choose to create a new console at all). Nintendo can certainly afford to keep making consoles, just based on their handhelds success. But the question is, will they do it, even if it means losing some revenue? _________________

They've also hinted that they don't CARE if they come out on top, and are content with having their own seperate niche.
Nintendo's game plan is no longer to beat Sony and Microsoft. It's to make something so uncomparable that it won't even be thought of as a main contender in future console wars. They've said that they expect gamers to own either a 360 or a PS3, and then also a Rev. on the side.
Now, is the Rev. the uncomparable system they're hunting for? Not really, but it's a step in that direction. _________________
