well, contact Brazil and tell 'em to do that. More police will definitely solve the problem. Now it's all like:
"Quick, it's the police! Throw the tarps over the bulldozers! Hide the logs!"
"Hello, guys in hard hats."
"Hi officer!"
"You're not logging in this area, are you?"
"N.. nno sir, not at all. This giant clearing just... appeared here the other day, and we were uh... planting... these tree stumps in it!"
"Oh, ok, carry on." _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

Adding more police, etc. to the areas, maybe throw in a helicopter or two to patrol the skies. They see any, they call in the Forest Friends SWAT Team.
Illegal logging is up to the local governments to stop. Not Bush. Legal logging is fine. Deal with it. _________________ I'M A TARD

and even if it's not, the US can't stop it if it's not on US soil.
heh, unless you want us to invade Brazil and do a War on Logging. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

the problem with wind is that it isn't constant. You have to set the windmills in the windiest place you can find and hope for fronts to come through.
Also, wind power doesn't generate too much, even in gale conditions.
A modern, large wind turbine can produce up to 6MW of power in "perfect" conditions(smaller ones produce 2MW of power max http://www.enercon.de/en/e112.htmhttp://www.enercon.de/en/e82.htm ). One turbine, that is. A fossil fuel plant burns approximately 1 ton of coal per hour to produce 2MW of power.(source: http://www.tva.gov/power/fossil.htm + a little math) A typical wind farm may have 100 or more turbines. Of course you have to carefully select where you place a wind farm, as peak output generally occurs around 30-40MPH winds... luckily, even at 1/3rd of peak, one turbine replaces 1 ton of coal per hour, and it's not all that hard to find locations that satisfy this 1/3rd peak requirement. We even have some wind farms here in MD that produce that much, and I've never thought of it as a windy state...
While wind power used to be rather expensive to produce, the cost has come down to be the same as, or lower than, fossil fuel production. All in all, wind power could work very well as a supplement to other production methods, however the variability and limited areas suitable for deployment limit it as a main source of power. Replacing fossil fuel with one alternative energy source is not viable, however working with multiple alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on oil and coal will at least make a very significant impact on fossil fuel consumption. Nuclear power may be able to replace fossil fuels some day, but the US refusal to build nuclear power plants, while at the same time developing nuclear weapons, is mind boggling. _________________
