It was funny, really funny, but I think it was kind of lacking due to the fact that none of the character's relationships ever go beyond "they're a messed up family" other than the gay uncle and the mute kid, and maybe Alan Arkin and the little girl.

You're missing the point. Six characters = thirty different relationships. I mentioned two.
I'm not saying they should've probed every single character's chemistry with each other, but just a little more depth would've been nice.
I still laughed through most of it.
