Religion offers a community of shared beliefs and all that fun stuff, and in an age without science it offered explanations for the greater phenomena in the world. And some other stuff too.
I'm a bit of a religion geek.
What about Buddhist traditions? Mainline Protestants? Hindus? Islam? Not all Christianity is hardcore evangelical asshole either.
Jack Thompson has hardcore religious ties. I think the wikipedia article mentions him being saved at some point.

This doesn't necessarily mean that religion in concept is bad, but rather the moronic fanatics that get on one thing and to a degree. die for it, blindly.

It goes to show what little you know about religion. Its not the religion itself, ITS HOW ITS USED by the individual. For example, you got your fanatics who would shun you and start their bible thumping like Jackie boy did, or phelps with his "fag" crusade. And you have those who have religion and are not fanatical.
Its the ones like Jackie T who makes religion in general look bad. Religion is not at all a bad thing regardless of the idiots who make it seen so. I myself used to be in Jack T's position, and I lost alot of friends being the one to tell them that theyre going to hell if they dont accept Jesus. Even writing about that makes me sick to my stomach on how I used to be. I later learned that being a fanatic is useless and it causes trouble. I mean, I used to break off friendships with people who wouldnt listen to me. I was a severe asshole. I used religion as a self righteous tool, like Jack T uses it. Religion isnt bad, its the person who uses it.

I think this is one of the few times I'll agree with ITS, I'm sorry Mark but in no way is religion 'utter bullshit', certainly a lot of people who belong to organized religion are but if you ask me, it's the atheists that ruin the world.
