"[Jesus Camp] "doesn't come with any prepackaged point of view" and tries to be "an honest and impartial depiction of one faction of the evangelical Christian communityā€¯. [2]"
"Falwell led services at Thomas Road Baptist Church, a megachurch in Lynchburg, Virginia. He changed affiliations from Baptist Bible Fellowship International to the mainly conservative Southern Baptist Convention, and ended his self-identification with fundamentalism in favor of evangelicalism."
You're not understanding his influence. He was as powerful a voice as Pat Robertson. _________________

Arguably he was more influential on the evangelical and fundamentalist community than Robertson himself: he was one of the people who really began the political side of Christianity as it is known today.
While he was a strong voice, I don't think he did any real-real-harm.
Jesus Camp depicts Pentecostals, which is definitely not Southern Baptist. Falwell, as far as I know, doesn't speak in tongues or believe in spiritual gifts to the degree of Jesus Camp. I know that Pat Robertson is a charismatic (read Pentecostal-lite) and I believe he is no longer affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention as a result of that. I'm pretty sure that all those healings on TV can be construed as a spiritual gift.
He was really hugely influential, but one could argue that it wasn't necessarily on a national level but more about galvanizing the evangelical masses into a cohesive voting bloc.
I do think he and Pat Robertson are complete assholes most of the time, but you gotta say that they really genuinely believe in what they're doing.
I wouldn't have a problem with Robertson dying. Man is old. Maybe Hugo Chavez should call for his assassination. _________________

As far as I know, not really.
There's a fantastic documentary about them by this guy Louis Theroux. You can find it on youtube--it's called the most hated family in america.
Hella interesting.
But yeah, no one really listens to the Phelps. _________________

Hilarity insues.
They're all idiots. The world needs to do more to pay us back for Steve Irwin and Kurt Vonnegut. _________________ "Me? I'm just a lawnmower.

I watched that whole documentary some time back. Louis is great...I think there was a full-length documentary he did about wrestling leagues and how fucking stupid those are. I remember he ended up going to a "practice" they held and they ran him until he threw up.
He did another special featuring skinheads and nazis where he lived with those little 10 or so year old aryan girls who sing about how awesome it is to be white.
great interviews _________________
