Not to drag this off topic too far, but I've never liked being too strict about that rule. It seems to me that if a word with two syllables sounds fine in the superlative like that, why not go with it? Then again, I'm the guy who read The Moonstone, saw the word "cleverer" and really liked the way it sounded, so I guess I'm not what you'd call a purist. |
You go to "college"? _________________

Yeah, I know almost nothing about the language. I mean, it's not like I'm on the verge of receiving a BA in English from a first-tier university. I often have to have local high school students edit my writing for style.

That is, in the top 2.275% of people in your age group. Above a 116 puts you in about the top 15%... So yeah, great thing to pass the time, but don't put too much faith in it. |
Aren't you assuming normality? |

Yes, I'm assuming normality, but IQ has proven itself to be a very normal distribution, so it's ok. _________________

Alright. I actually know nothing about the distribution of IQ test scores.
For all I know, there could be very few scored that fall within one standard deviation of μ (which I assume is 100). Most of the scores could fall one or two standard deviations above or below μ, which would mean that having those scores is not as abnormal as you say.
But I’m wrong, of course. *Shrug* |

Well, that would be more likely to happen if IQ tests weren't designed to produce a standard distribution of scores, so the scores are easier to compare(and work well with the IQ scales in use). _________________

I think when I tested in second or third grade or whatever it was like, 140 something, but an IQ test more recently was more like, 120.
Honestly I don't think IQ tests really measure intelligence that well. I just don't think it really can be measured. _________________

Yeah, agreed. I talked to my cousin about it a while back, and he said he always scores really low on IQ tests, because they only focus on certain things he isn't so great at. He's extremely smart though, just in other areas.
Plus, I tend to score low on IQ tests, so I try to tell myself they aren't right ... >.> _________________ Homsars Girl n. a bagpipe bent on engulfing the world in a mix of pepper and ketchup.

Well that's what happens when you try to create a scale so that it produces a normal distribution, even when what it's supposed to measure is not necessarily a normal distribution. It gets all messed up. Not to mention the near-impossibilityy of measuring "intelligence", a concept which has no concrete measurable definition to begin with. _________________
