city driving is totally necessary. I'm not going to abandon my car every time I have to drive through downtown.

do you really need a car in a city, where there's public transportation abound?

personally, if i ever end up living in a city, i'm totally getting rid of any car i own. too expensive to keep--it may be more convenient at times, but for the most part it seems a waste. i kind of want a vespa, i've been dreaming of a vespa~ but bikes are perfect for the distances one would typically travel in a city. plus, it's usually faster. at least in new york city it typically is, every once in a while i wind up reading something concerning races between bikers, drivers, subway riders, walkers, etc, and the bikers win most of the time. plus you can get exercise, which is something all us american fatasses need!

raising taxes on gas would be a way to decrease gas consumption but no one has the guts to do it. it would be pretty cool if those theoretical taxes went to fund research into alternative fuels and engines and stuff. never going to happen though Sad

I live in Pittsburgh, not Munich.

Mopeds are a semi-viable means of urban transport if you're not in shape for a bicycle. You can get some pretty awesome gas mileage (like 100 miles to the gallon), but you'll never go faster than 35 mph. Vespas and other scooters don't get much better than cars for gas bills. Whatever, bikes are still the best.

Sexy hierarchy of urban transportation:
1. Fixed gear bicycles
2. Road bicycles
3. Mopeds
4. Longboards
5. Mass transit
6. Mountain bicycles
7. Motorcycles
8. Cars

Maybe true, but the fact is that hybrids do much better for city fuel efficiency than highway.

Yeah, Mike, better keep an eye out riding your bike through downtown as I glide by silently running on my electric motor!

Totally joking... if I could get away with it, I would totally abandon my car.

Yeah, I'd never do that.

What if everywhere you needed to go was within walking distance?

Then we'd be living inside of a Wal-Mart, Ray.

ain't gonna happen.

I mean, yeah, when I'm at college, my car sits unused for a month at a time, but I still need my car to get home.

And right now, I need my car to get to work.

I will always own a car as long as I can afford it, no matter what.

by the way, I totally encourage all of you to follow that chart, though. The less cars in the city, the more pleasant it'll be for the ones still driving.
