the guy in there was a high functioning autistic, and autism is definitely different from mental retardation. many autistics have high iqs, and mental retardation is defined by some iq threshold i believe. from what i know of autism it is diagnosed based more on social standings than of those on intelligence--meeting developmental milestones such as speaking, et cetera. mind you, some people are severely autistic and can appear retarded, but that book definitely doesn't portray a person like that. _________________

at varying times i've been dyspraxic, adhd, depressed, and social anxiety'd! and i'm pretty damn sure i have some auditory processing problems. and i think all of that stuff has affected my verbal ability period. my parents even thought i was deaf when i was little. i hear some things really well but i mix up a lot of sounds--i actually requested an auditory disorder screening when i went through an iep thing again during junior year, but there wasn't a real pattern of disorder as the speech pathologist told me. man, she was stupid. i was in speech therapy until middle school and for a bit through high school, though i never showed up for those sessions. _________________

My kindergarten teacher thought I was stupid because of that. D; (I complained about stuff being boring :3 ) |

oh, duh, technically i have "add" but here in the states they refer to them all as "adhd" but i'm "inattentive type" which means it's just add.
though i do have some hyperactive moments. i crochet, color, and origami in class. _________________

I catch myself rocking back and forth sometimes, and talk to myself now and then. But other than that I'm pretty normal. _________________

ADD is totally made-up, I think. People just want to throw liability on anything but themselves. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

I actually couldn't talk until age 6, but I could read at age 4.
Needless to say, my mom and dad were freaking out from ages 4-6. |

I don't think I'd go that far. I think maybe calling ADD a "disorder" is pushing it too far, considering how many people have it, children and adults. I think children are absolutely over-medicated. Perhaps ADD is simply a natural state for a large part of the population, and we are just starting to understand it. Perhaps, but I wouldn't say it's made up.
I like that Mark Haddon book, because it contains one of the best passages in any book ever:
"What actually happens when you die is that your brain stops working and your body rots, like Rabbit did when he died and we buried him in the earth at the bottom of the garden. And all his molecules were broken down into other molecules and they went into the earth… But that is all right because he is a part of the flowers and the apple tree and the hawthorne bush now." |

I think that ADD/ADHD is used as an excuse too much, although I don't think it's made up. Whenever I come home with a funny story about some stupid kid from school, my mom always says something to the extent of "don't make fun of him, he just has ADD or something."
I don't think she gets it.

There are theories (though I'm not sure if they're fully discussed in the scientific literature) pretty much saying similar things--that those diagnosed with AD/HD just encompass a different way of thinking. some people use the term "neurodiversity" which was pretty much taken from autistic movements. then there's the "hunter vs farmer theory" which pretty much talks about the same kind of thing. _________________

Aw yeah. That's the book that really made me fascinated.
I got into a private school as a little kid. I was in third grad by age 4 or 5. It was too expensive, though, and I had to go to public school where I was bumped down to first grade. |
