Time is not a "dimension", it's just been labelled that way by physicists as a way of understanding natural events.
Time is the name that we give to the constant change in our surroundings. It's a concept that humans use to make sense of their surroundings. The original, basic unit of time is the "day", the time it takes our planet to rotate 360 degreees through light and shadow. Our calendar is based upon the observable movements of the cosmos. The atomic clock calculates time based upon the atomic emissions of certain elements. My point is that our conception of time is grounded in our present physical realities.
Basically, the past and the future do not exist. There is only the present: a three-dimensional place of constantly shifting atoms. The past and future do not exist as places you can go to. All possibility of travelling through time, according to Einstein, involves faster-than-light travel... something Einstein himself proved impossible (with the exception of "wormholes" in space-time, an idea which is, at best, fanciful science fiction).
Now I'm all worked up. Time travel is a pet peeve of mine, and discussing it seriously irritates me. I cannot believe how such brilliant minds can fall into the "what if" trap and fail to see the forest for the trees. |

If time travel was possible, we would already know about it. _________________

Just saw this on Yahoo news, so I figured I'd throw it here for further debate. Add in a sprinkle of this as well with a dash of Einstein quotage
(Now he has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means nothing. People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.)
and let the banter begin. |

Boy, between Ron Mallett and Amos Ori, Ken Olum really has his work cut out for him writing response papers. . . . _________________ Married to Terri.

I like how physicists will get so wrapped up in "if we assume this sort of imaginary matter, then time travel would be possible if..." and seem to forget such matter does not and cannot exist, and therefore time travel is impossible.
And if Matt means what I think he means, then I'm with him. The past isn't a place that exists that you can go to. The future doesn't exist because it has not happened yet. There is only the present moment, in which matter and energy are constantly flying around. |

I have no idea who you're talking about so I'll assume I just got burned magnificently beyond all comprehension. |

Haha, naw. Ron Mallett is the guy in the original video that started this thread. Amos Ori is the guy in that Yahoo news article. Ken Olum is quoted at the end of the same article . . . I guess he gets to be the "token skeptic" in all of the time travel articles now. He co-authored a response paper to Mallett's time travel paper, so I assume one will be in the works when Ori gets his thing published, too. _________________ Married to Terri.
