superbad was hilarious

i dont understand exactly what makes juno awards material and not knocked up. mike is right, it was a good movie and all but it shouldnt win any awards except for maybe best actress because other nominations are weak

I'm pissed into the wild wasnt nominated for anything. next to no country for old men it was probably my favorite this year

Sweeney Todd was supposed to be like a silent film put to music. Like Nosferatu meets Phantom of the Opera, but nothing like Phantom of the Opera. I don't understand how the songs are repetitive. There are a few refrains, but it's not like it's the first musical to have them.

And to answer TeamAmerica, I just didn't find Superbad all that funny. I enjoyed Juno a lot more, but I don't believe it deserves a Best Picture nomination. I haven't seen Knocked Up yet, but I'm really not a fan of Judd Apatow's humor. His best work to me is still The 40 Year-Old Virgin, and even that isn't that great to me.

I liked Sweeny Todd, but mike's got a point. none of the songs were memorable (the exception, funnily enough, being the sacha baron cohen number)

Personally, I think Sweeney Todd is one of the most well written musicals ever made. It's smart and the lyrics and music work really well together. It's also a really hard one to pull off. I think in order to get the full experience, you'd have to see it on stage. Unfortunately the only one on Broadway right now is the ridiculous revival version. If any schools near you happen to do it, I suggest going to see it. The movie was made to be a movie rather than a movie based on a musical, so they're two totally different experiences.

Sweeny Todd was Goth High School Musical. End of story.

Now I remember why I left in the first place. It's impossible to have an intelligent conversation of any kind here.

I think it's because you don't have a sense of humor about yourself. Besides that Burton-barrel-roll was awesome.

I didn't catch the silent film bit, and I'm certainly not the expert of silent films other than TCM and what I covered in a survey history of film class, but I totally caught Suspiria, and not Nosferatu or Phantom of the Opera (I'm guessing you're referring to the silent one). Hell, I'd be fine with those two. When you emulate Argento, things can just feel kinda fake and overdone if not pulled off carefully. Then again, the whole fake and overdone bit is why I really don't like musical theatre in the first place. It's so hard for me to even take Opera seriously, though.

Like, you gotta keep in mind I'm totally coming from this filmic school of thought where things are just at gut level whether something is either good or it isn't. I didn't feel Sweeny Todd. I don't have the energy for a fully dissected critique. The graphic neon red blood was pretty cool for a mainstream Hollywood feature for awhile, though. I'll give it that.

tldr-> I'm a film student; I hate movies.

Sploich, are you sure you don't like Sweeney Todd just because you like everything else Burton ever made?

'cause I myself know the reverse is true for me. I know I'll hate Sweeney Todd if I ever see it, since I hated every Burton movie I've ever seen.

Well, with the possible exception of The Nightmare Before Christmas... I saw that once when I was pretty little, and I remember being intrigued by it even though I don't remember really liking it. Though, Burton didn't direct it, he only wrote it, so maybe that's why I don't outright hate it.

I think Burton is alright in spatters. I totally loved Ed Wood, and Mars Attacks! was alright. Maybe that's just because I'm a big b-movie guy, though.

Also, Superbad is just that.

Incorrect.

Bonnie, it's definitely worth a look if you want to pop down to your local Video Ezy (do you guys have Video Ezy or is that a Victorian thing?) and rent it.

oh yeah, we got Video Ezy f'real - hell, I have their theme song stuck in my head half the day, I trust it's the same here as it is over there.

I might do that sometime, but usually I just rent Top Gear DVDs.
