Even up to the middle ages. |
swords have actually been used in the 20th century, by the Japanese, some African and Middle Eastern peoples, and also by many police forces. They were also used in some frequency during Colonial ages.
My favourite sword is the Greek kopis, most frequently used 5th-3rd century BCE.
The Iberians adopted it from Greek colonists in Spain and referred to it more famously as the 'Falcata'. |
I love you and your knowledge filled brain. _________________ beep beep I'm a jeep |

The wakazashi and katana were still used by the Japanese in WW2, is what I'm trying to say (probably the tanto too). Also, apparently a dumbed-down version of the kopis is still being used by elite British police forces. Wish I could see how different it looks for the modern world! _________________

Friend of mine gave me this little short sword, looks rather fictional and medieval, so not really my bag.
If I had a xiphos or a kopis, I would probably practice with it. _________________

I like swords.
And knives.
And needles.
And thumbtacks.
And axes.
And spikes.
And nails.
And Maces.
And Scythes.
And guillotines.
And pencils.
And random bits of pointy metal.
Yes. |

This is a keyblade. It doesn't really have a blade, therefore it is not a sword. _________________ beep beep I'm a jeep |

True, it's not even sharp (,whose post was less than satisfactory for this thread). It is a blunt weapon. A bow is not a sword either.
This however, is a sword. |

My katana I've had for years.
The swords used in the Japanese army were mostly machine made shin guntō, but a number of them were ancestral. The machine made ones were graded from crap to superior ie: tempered in oil, which results in the hamon (temperline) being reveald of the differentually tempered steel. and "case hardening" etc. At the end of the war, many Japanese disfigured their 'Mon', or family crest on their swords as not to bring shame upon their family name.
AWESOME friken vid of a bullet being split by a Katana blade:

Its in Japanese, but the vid speaks for itself. _________________ MY BARF is TASTIER than Yours!!!

Whether you are cutting of the head of an infidel or waving it around in the air, scimitars are cool. _________________

I like the scimitars with the wider blades more.
Also, I have a wakizashi, but it's machine-made. It's way too much money to buy an actual hand-crafted Japanese sword these days. |

Yeah a good folded and forged steel sword nowadays would cost 1650bucks. I paid almost as much for one of mine _________________ MY BARF is TASTIER than Yours!!!
