I hate all the scapegoating and blamegaming. Can't we just mourn the dead?

Open campuses, creative writing classes, confused policemen, videogames, and lax/strict gun control laws have no real effect on why and how the tragedy happened. The guy was fucked up in the head, and the only thing that went wrong is that he couldn't receive the counseling he desperately needed.

There's no real way to protect yourself from or prevent freak occurences like in Blacksburg. None. And that's why it all sucks so much. I guess there's comfort in finding culpability in Virginia Tech's administration or security, but it's unreasonable to have so much expectations on coercive authority as a big protective blanket in the first place.

carry a gun and know how to use it.

But nobody likes that answer, 'cause it means there's more people with guns, and more potential loonies with guns.

He's right, and you're partially wrong. Why can't a tragedy be a tragedy? It is what it is. This has nothing to do with what laws are or are not on the books.

Our friends in the media have felt the need to define it for us. It's "horrible." It's "tragic." We do not need them to tell us how "horrible" it was. And assuming we can all agree on that, then I think we can agree to treat this as a plain and simple "tragedy." We can say a lot about this, but it doesn't change what happened.

So let's try and keep our thoughts on those family members and friends whose loss is so huge. That's the most important thing now. We can deal with the "what if's" later.

I agree with you... however, we need to keep in mind that this will affect all of us, as Americans, for a long time to come. I don't think it's out of line to discuss whether or not anyone is culpable for what happened, and what the implications will be for our country.

Sucks what happend. i have 32 votive candles lit for them. Their families are in my prayers.

I heard on the radio that the guy who did this alerted his intructors attention by writing weird crap. They found a note on him stating that he hated the rich people and that the rich is responsible for all the sorrow in the world. And he signed it "Ishmael Ax", which was written on his arm.

I just watched a video on NYTimes.com that said a part-time student at Boston University was arrested and barred from campus after giving a letter to an ex-girlfriend, threatening to bring a gun to campus and create "Virginia Tech all over again."

What the heck! My school is a scary place, apparently.

That must be how you tell a girl that you love her now.

I don't recall where I read it so I can't source it properly but during that gap apparently they were investigating something but it turned out to be a false lead... at least they were trying to do something, even if it wasn't fruitful.

I got an email from my mom today mentioning that one of the guys killed was from my hometown, but I just looked it up and it appears as if I don't know him at all. And that video, according to the new york times, could have been inspired by Oldboy... I like that movie personally, even if it made me squirm with all the violence.

It bugs me when people blame all of this stuff on media or culture or whatever. It was terrible. But that doesn't always mean we, as a society, incited it.

Seems to me if I were going to go on a rampage, and took the time to take photos and video and create a multimedia manifesto... I'd want it to be quality material. I mean, if you're going to do something extreme, and it will be the last thing you ever do, and you feel the need to send a specific message, you'd want to do it right. This shit is totally hodgepodge, and borderline incoherent.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this guy was a psycopath, sure. But he also wins the prize for "shittiest, lamest manifesto ever". "Let the revolution begin"? Please.

Is it okay to ridicule a mass-murderer? Am I being an ass? I really can't decide.

Yesterday a series of bombs killed almost 200 people in Iraq. you may have missed it since the story was buried in a sea of lame continuing coverage of this VT story. Isn't all the news attention to these stories a big part of the problem?
