It's pretty much a love/hate thing. Unlike SNL, they've had essentially the same cast for the entire time they've been on the air. So if you didn't like it when it first came out, chances are you probably never have or will.
Personally, I think some of the best skits MADtv puts out are the ones that don't actually involve their trademark characters (Stewie, Ms. Swann, that coughing lady that I don't know the name of). Most of those are really monotonous and they just recycle the same jokes over and over again and expect them to still be funny.

And let me be more specific; madtv is consistently funny in that each episode has at least a few good sketches. Yeah, some are pretty unfunny. They just seem to put more effort into it overall, since it's not a live show. SNL relies too much on the chance that someone might improvise or break character. I mean that one sketch with Will Ferrell and Rachel Dratch were lovers in a hot tub was completely boring except for the fact that everyone broke character and started cracking up. And that was mainly because Jimmy Fallon can't act for shit and he just started a domino effect. |
