I don't mind individual people too much, but I'm pretty dang cynical about people as a whole.
I guess that's why I'm a conservative libertarian.

Nah... at least captialism takes into account that humans are lazy and self-serving.

You just hate people, don't you? Wink

Maybe, but he's right. That's why communism could never work, at least as it was originally invisioned by Marx.

right, and therein lies the flaw.

Everyone's probably already seen this, but I feel it's appropriate.

One of the worse parts of threadless: if you don't know the t-shirt's "title," it isn't funny at all.

This is one of the easier ones to guess, though.

I like how communism and democracy are now mutually exclusive terms.

Communism works nicely. In an ideal world. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world.

well, communism requires an oppressive dictator for it to work at all... if the unrewarded people aren't forced to work by an oppressive government, then they won't, and democracy is pretty much by definition unoppressive.

No it doesn't. Maybe on a national scale, but that's too messy anyway. Communism works best on the 50-100 commune-sized operation, and then everyone is there by choice. And democracy, unless it is purely consensus democracy, can be just as oppressive! Ever heard of "tyranny by majority"?

After all, the practical reason why, when the power is once in the hands of the people, a majority are permitted, and for a long period continue, to rule, is not because they are most likely to be in the right, nor because this seems fairest to the minority, but because they are physically the strongest. But a government in which the majority rule in all cases cannot be based on justice, even as far as men understand it. Can there not be a government in which majorities do not virtually decide right and wrong, but conscience?—in which majorities decide only those questions to which the rule of expediency is applicable? Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience, then? I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward.

Democracy is just as idealized as any system. I'm sick of all this talk about how whatever ideal is just a utopian attempt that doesn't work in the realm of human nature. Fuck human nature, and fuck cynicism. Or you know what? I'll commit myself to the popular thought process: Democracy can't work because the egos of people some are too large to make themselves equal to their fellow citizens. That's why America has a representative system, so the moron, elected-oligarch, priest-caste can hold control over other people. That's why cops are dicks! The system is set up in such a manner where only the strong rule. No, not the smart, not the qualified, not the righteous, and not the brave.

Hey, maybe you've gotten beaten down by "the man" too many times, but all the cops I know are very nice people.

And if a governmental system (or lack thereof) only works on a small group of willing people, then it doesn't really work, does it?

'cause the world isn't a small group, nor are the majority willing. Democracy and Capitalism are the best systems we've put in place so far.

So yeah Mikes, you go run off and join your little hamlet where everyone's willing to live in anarchy and not steal and kill each other, just 'cause you're all paranoid about police. I'm staying here in the real world, where people are lazy, self-serving, stupid and power-hungry, and I'm going to do it under what I believe to be the best form of government using the best economic system.

Good job avoiding confronting all his points for the sake of restating your opinion, ITS.

By the way, respinding to me and not him now is another way of avoiding his points as well.

but he's right on a lot of them.
Well..
the US is split almost right down the middle between republican and democrat, so power can bounce around between the "majorities" and the constitution prevents most instances of tyranny anyway...

so I think our system works pretty well.

And I didn't avoid all his points, and I didn't just restate my opinion. You read as well as you think I do, it seems. Maybe sometimes I just don't FEEL like arguing all those points.

or maybe you dont have a stable enough argument to argue any of his good points.

actually, one of the only points in your rebuttal was basically a "not in my personal experience". you should really visit a major city sometime, sneak.

The big point was that democracy is flawed, as is communism. If someone is correct on a point, concede that to them.

This split annoys me immensely. When clinton came into office, the republicans all hated him because theu didn't have a president any more. And because to that, democrats all had bush just as much.
