North Korea and Iran probably don't think the US is very sane.
Hell there's alot of people within the US that don't think we're very sane.
The fact that we have nukes and they don't means that they feel threatened, especially since they see us as enemies. Telling them "hey you guys are insane and might use those weapons but we won't!" wouldn't be a sufficient arguement at all to try and get them to disarm. Hell it might have the opposite effect. |
but the leaders of those countries know our process of government... they know it'd be impossible for any one person to launch our nukes.
Let me put it another way... We can't trust them with nukes. However, they've trusted us with nukes for 60 years.
Well...
maybe not trusted, but we've had them for over 60 years and only used two of them...
and that was in retaliation...
and that was to end a war.
We've been responsible with ours. So has every other nation that has them...
but the nuclear club is now closed. We don't want any more nations developing them, since the world already has a sufficient supply to destroy itself.

Last time I checked we entered into a War on Terror in retaliation to the 9/11 attacks.
I'm not saying of course that we're actually going to use our nuclear arsenal. But that doesn't mean Iran and North Korea don't have reason to be cautious and try and develop a nuclear arsenal of their own. |

but it's not being cautious, it's being stupid. The US and China have the largest supplies of nukes on the planet, and we're the biggest countries on the planet. If North Korea or Iran fires their measly one piffling little nuke at us, it'll take out a major city at most. If we fire up to what... four of our hundreds, it'll take out their entire country. We're more resilient to nuclear attacks, and we have the best ability to inflict them.
In other words, arming yourself with nuclear weapons is a very stupid thing to do.
"Hey world! I have nukes now! You'd better aim a few of yours at our country now in case we ever attack!"
No country in the world could ever get away with nuking someone who at the very least didn't have nukes of their own...
but if we can justify it as narrowly preventing (or even retaliating for) a nuclear attack from that country, we could probably get away with it.

What's with all the idiot dictators acting like 4-year-olds trying to steal cookies? Do they not know what happens to 4-year-olds who will only show one hand at a time to the parent who says "What do you have behind your back?" That 4-year-old gets both his hands grabbed, and then he gets turned around and spanked, even if there's nothing in either hand.
Here's why it's not that simple: Most tyrants have a pillow covering their bum that can make spanking difficult. What is this pillow stuffed with? That's right, the citizens of his country. What that means is that a whole lot of citizens have to take quite a thrashing in order for the tyrant to even notice he's being spanked.
And, of course, there are ways to get around that pillow, but they take lots of time and don't have the immediate result of blowing lots of stuff up, which is what people in power seem to think is what should happen.

Yeah, that's what happened to Iraq. They wouldn't show us both hands at a time, so we went in and spanked Saddam.
North Korea, however, is a kid saying "look at me! I STOLE the cookies! Come and get me!" ... and is concealing a tazer.

Who said they'd have to fire first in order for the intended effect to be reached?
If we thought about firing a nuclear warhead at Iran or North Korea for any reason, our decision-making process would most certainly be affected if they had nuclear arms. They're most likely going to use a nuclear missle as a deterrant rather than an actual weapon. If we fired a nuclear weapon at either country we'd have to worry about retaliation if they had a nuke. Otherwise we wouldn't. The threat of losing a major city (which certainly can happen with any size of nuke) would be enough to prevent any nuclear attack. They're developing nukes for the same reason we continue to have a nuclear arsenal, defense. I think the concept of mutally-assured destruction would be more than enough to prevent a missle attack between two nuclear-armed countries.
And boy, you sure took the idea of losing a major city in stride. 9/11 was a serious blow to our nation and only 3 buildings were lost. Losing a major city to a nuclear warhead would be the greatest single disaster in American history. That's what "one measly piffling little nuke" can do. |

Nah, you missed the point. Our nuclear arsenal is sufficient to completely destroy those countries... there would be nobody there to retaliate.

Again, missed the point. Yeah, it'd be terrible, but that's all they could do to us. We can wipe their entire country off the map.
When you consider attacking the US, you have to worry about mutually assured destruction. When the US considers attacking a country as small as Iran or North Korea, we don't have to worry about mutually assured destruction, since we have a much larger capacity for destruction than they have.
