Yeah, Nixon didn't like that Lennon was such a big star being so outspoken against the war. Nixon was dumb.
'Cause did Lennon stop the war? Not by any means.
and he may have become anti-religious later, but the "bigger than Jesus" thing wasn't. Lennon's own comments:

John Lennon didn't change the world so much with his ideas... it was pretty much all his and Paul's (and the rests's) music that changed the musical world, to a great benefit for everyone.

I wasn't kind of appropriating it to you exactly, just the argument in general. honestly though I will dislike Lennon consideribly more if any anti-religious statements were intended in 'imagine'.
