There's far too many people in this world that believe if you remove God, there's no reason to be good or kind to anybody.
It's a pretty shitty line of thinking. These people believe that without the fear of hell, there's no reason to do good in this world. Who the fuck needs fear to do anything? I swear.
Of course, I guess that's why the beliefnet test picked me to be a secular humanist. I can be a good person without feeling like some higher power wants me to.

To answer the unanswerable.
That's it in a nutshell. Everything else about religion is just added on there for control. |

To answer the unanswerable.
That's it in a nutshell. Everything else about religion is just added on there for control. | Actually, that was a facetious question, because the whole reasoning behind this quiz irks me.
The real reason for (western) religions is to give praise to God because, well, he's God, and he deserves it. To worship him and to do as he commands.
The idea that the purpose of a religion is to guide people, or to teach them values, is incorrect. That idea puts the focus of religion on serving the people, rather than on serving God. If a religion exists to serve society rather than to serve God, then its purpose is eliminated.
Taken from a long discussion with my friend Nathan, the catholic priest. |

| Good point. The idea is that God shows grace to those who are truly devoted to him. Or, he showers you with hardship to "test" you. Could go either way, right? |

Though, turning to God for help isn't necessarily fruitless... he might feel like helping out. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

Well, now we're going to be getting into the semantics of the word "purpose" and "religion".
My definition was for the purpose of the creation of religion. As in, why religion exists.
Your definiton assumes the existance of God and thus defines the "purpose" of organized religion as it relates to its followers.
My belief is that religion is simply defined as a set of beliefs to answer questions about the unknown. It seems yours is of a large, organized body consisting of many members united in a belief of some sort of supernatural diety. |
