But then Apple's been getting sued a lot recently. They're stepping on a lot of toes and patents.
Don't know if the Macbook infringes, but I wouldn't be surprised. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

when a company is really successful, they will get sued. microsoft has probably been sued up the ass, and they probably ripped off technology here and there, but that doesnt matter because they put out the superior product. i want to know how successful creative was before the ipod was around. in fact, its, you probably wouldnt even know what it was if it werent for apple.

Pretty much... Creative Nomads die far too easily and are really bulky. Not even remotely sexy like my ipod nano. _________________ Homsars Girl n. a bagpipe bent on engulfing the world in a mix of pepper and ketchup.

My brother had a Nomad. It took a few months for it to die. (My 100 dollar MP3 player lasted longer) I mean, just because you hate Apple doesn't mean they're incapable of making quality products.

O rly? My friend Joey has had the same nomad for as long as I've known him (about 3 years).
Conversely my friend Andrew broke 3 iPods in the first year I knew him. And he isn't an athelete. _________________ I'M A TARD

Apple KNEW they were infringing on the patent when they were denied theirs.
Apple also infringed on a Microsoft patent on generating playlists when they made the iPod. I don't think Microsoft has had any big patent infringement cases... just software components they weren't aware they were stealing... for instance: Autorun and displaying items embedded in web pages... and a lot of other people have also infringed on those patents.
Apple, however, has always been a thief. Finder? Stolen from Xerox.
in fact, I think the last innovative thing Apple ever came up with was the Apple IIe. Ever since Macs have been around, they've just been stealing.
For instance, the Creative patent they're infringing on is the menu system. Creative patented the way the menu system works on the Nomad. Apple stole it pretty much outright... they could've come up with another system, but they didn't. Creative cried foul then, but waited until now to sue... they were hoping they could outdo Apple... but they're losing a lot of money.
And I probably would've bought a Creative Nomad eventually... I remember seeing magazine ads for the MuVo in like ... 2000 or 2001.
So yeah, knowing and uncaring violation of patent laws, exclusive use of incompatible file formats, overbearing DRM, blatantly wrong statements about hardware performance, and their biggest marketing draw is that their products are shinier.
Add that up and you get Apple, a very very evil company.
Take a few off the list and you get Sony, an evil company.
The only thing on that list Microsoft is guilty of is overbearing DRM, but WMA is very accessible, so it's not much of a problem. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

I don't like WMA actually... I know that they're small but the protection thing bugs me (do they still have that? i know windows media used to do that by default and it took me a while to turn it off), and with MP3 at least I know if I get something other than an iPod nano that my music will still work with it. The store and mp4 is a little bitchy, but I don't know anyone who buys music off iTunes--even though it's a cultural phenomenon, but that goes hand-in-hand with the iPod. They sell songs at 128 anyways. D: I hate buying digital music.
And I know people with iPods who have gotten them replaced like five gazillion times. My sister's on her third (the second they gave her, a refurbished one, had a button totally stuck--their fault). I'm still on my first and I got it in october, I don't think anything's wrong with it yet. But I like the iPods because I like the clickwhell (admittedly, not sure how original that is) because I like the size and shape of the nano (tiny) and it's a good size for me. It slips into my pocket and it can just play my shit on random. I wasn't aware that the music hierarchy thing was stolen, but it always seemed like the easiest way to organize music for me at the least--call me an idiot, but I never thought it was innovative. I just know it's the easiest system out there to use and adapt to in terms of song navigation. I've had friends with nomads and I didn't like them, the way you had to click through all your music, the design. And trust me, I felt like a corporate whore when I wanted an Apple iPod for my birthday.
Why do I want a Macbook? Simply because I like Macs. I like the design, and I like the way the OS works a bit better than Windows. Will I miss my ocassional PC gaming? Yes, but I think I can go without my lame-o bargain bin CDROMs. For what I use my computer for (graphic design, web design, word processing, the ocassional spreadsheet, and a lot of internet stuffs) a Macbook will do just fine. Am I a corporate whore? Probably. But I also like not having to worry about nearly as much spyware and viruses as I do with my computer now, and the simple layout, and garageband and iMovie (way better than windows movie maker, you got to admit that at the least).
And I have a hunch that the Apple notebook will last me a bit longer: in specs, I mean. PCs seemingly go up in specs everyday. I'm going to be using this thing for at least two years, if not four, and it'll hopefully hold up and not be totally outdone too.
If you have any other ideas for computers for me, ITS, throw 'em at me. I don't do anything particularly taxing (I don't use Photoshop for print, really) so an affordable option would be appreciated. :3

At least WMA can be played in basically anything... M4P can only be played in iTunes... or in RealPlayer, but not if Apple has anything to do about it.

It doesn't. This has been proven. And now that the Eye of Sauron that is spyware and virii is starting to glance at Mac OSX, it's going to get worse. Apple is reportedly slower than Microsoft has been with patches.

so you're buying a Macbook because while it's hardware will be quickly obsolete by PC standards, it's a Mac so that doesn't matter?

Well, if you don't mind not being able to game, then you can buy a PC notebook that'll fit your needs for probably $500 less than a Macbook. The Macbook's specs are way too high for what you want to do. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

Well, ITS:
1) Buying CDs is better value, anyway.
2) Apple makes the hardware and software, so the overall experience will be better than Windows, if only because Microsoft doesn't work with any PC manufacturer.
3) Any laptop is in the $1000 range that I'd want.

Apple has a vertical monopoly that means they can do whatever they want to their customers and not get in trouble, so I'd be wary of that. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck
