I'm thinking about getting a new electric guitar. The one I have now isn't the best, and the connections are getting sloppy. Not to mention, it's been letting go of tune more quickly than before.

If I was going to go look for a new guitar, what do you guys think I should go after. I am looking for one which has a nice sound, not too heavy metal style. So I am ruling out all flying v's, lightning bolts, wizzards, and the like. It must be good quality. It must be easily available to me. It mustn't break too easily.

AND, it must look pretty.

If there is anything you suggest I be looking for, as in qualities of a good guitar, or particular brand, I'd like to know.

Some ones that are looking nice to me right now are some D'Addario ones. There is a hollow body at one of my local stores. As in literally hollow. It's only the outside frame, the neck and the string/pickups/otherstuff.

Suggestions would be nice. Now go! Do my bidding!

I'm thinking that the going-out-of-tune-more has more to do with the strings than the guitar.

Anyway, SG's are fairly good, I hear. Obviously you'd want to get an Epiphone one unless you have a shit-load of money lying around.

My guitar teacher was saying that it is actually the knobs that keep the guitar tuned are weakening... But I suppose we will find out soon enough.

Some ones that are on sale that caught my attention here are:

Ibanez AS73 Brown Sunburst

Ibanez AM73

600 dollars each.

I had some more... but I seem to have lost the names/locations

Yeah, that's probably it.

I kinda want a new guitar too. Sometimes when I change pickups it doesn't connect them to the jack (or something). I just has no money to buy one. Sad

Same. It doesn't connect, or crackles and pops until you mess around with it enough to get a signal.

Yay for old guitars. Woozy

What I really want is a Gibson Explorer. Great tone for metal and looks kickass.

1) What sound are you going for?
2) What's your price range?
3) D'Addario makes guitars, too?

In regards to your old guitar, it's usually a good idea to replace the electronics in a cheap guitar if you intend on keeping it for very long, and cheap guitars that hold tuning without being modded aren't as common as you might think (although they aren't as uncommon as some people think).

Anyway, if the market segment you're interested in is relatively cheap semi-hollowbodies, the Artcore line is a great place to start looking. There aren't many Artcores I've played that I haven't liked. Some others to consider:
Epiphone Dot (though I'd probably stay away from the Studio)
Epiphone Casino - this might not be as much up your alley if you plan on playing with a lot of gain and aren't a fan of feedback/stuffing your guitar with a t-shirt, but they're great guitars.
Schecter Corsair
Hagstrom Viking - I've wanted one of these forever, and it turns out that they're now actually easy to find AND only $450. I think I might have to get one.

So those are some places to look, just going off the fact that you mentioned two semi-hollows. As always, play everything before you buy it, preferably through an amp similar to yours. Also, if you answer the first two questions, I can probably be of a little more help (or I'd like to think so, anyway).

1) I'm going for a good sound. Definitely not heavy metal, but I'd like to get into some Rock/Jazz/Mellow/Electric sort of sound. High distortion isn't in my high priority list.

2) Price range. I'm saving up right now, and my family will chip in for a birthday/christmas present... So I'd say 4-600 dollars. Nothing too pricey...

3) I certainly hope so, because my music lesson place's store has a few.

Epiphone has really gotten replica guitars down to an artform lately, and they sound outstanding. I've seen some beautiful Les Paul replicas come out that I've got my eye(s) on. But, if you're looking for something a little more comfortable, I say go the Fender route. Easy action, trademark tone, and if you go with the Squier (which has also really gotten better in the past 5-10 years) it'll be affordable. But thats all only if you're on a budget. If not, just get a PRS or LP custom and be done with it.

Is it a question of you *need* a new guitar because your old one is having problems, or you *want* one?

I ask because most likely your electronics are dirty and you can fix that yourself.

The tuning is a different issue. Yes, new strings. But also your neck may be getting warped. That can be fixed and would cost less than a new guitar. Also it could be an issue with your bridge... especially if it's suspended (wammy bar). These are simple adjustments an expert can do for you.

In other words, I think your teacher is probably wrong about the cause... I've never heard such an explanation before (doesn't mean it doesn't exist, though).

Just throwing out some thoughts. Guitars are expensive... hate to see you spend more than you have to!
