alright, so i know this was last page, but can someone explain nafta to me in a way that's slightly shorter than the wikipedia article?
the arguments against nafta here are more of the "fair trade lol" variety. _________________

i think it's about trading with tarrifs instead of without, which would create more jobs in america--which is why organized labor wants to get rid of it. _________________

yeah, basically, there are no tarrifs between the US, Canada and Mexico.
Which means there's no extra cost to ship things made in Mexico.
Which means we can export our manufacturing jobs to Mexico, and Mexico's economy would benefit.
But of course, unskilled laborers in the US are completely against it, because if the factories move to Mexico in search of cheaper labor, then the only job choices left are basically either retail or janitorial work.

Sneak's got it pretty well sewed up: NAFTA means America doesn't have to pay fees on goods imported from Mexico and Canada, and Mexicans and Canadians don't have to pay fees on American goods. There's a lot more to it, but that's the basic gist of it.
This makes Mexican goods cheaper to Americans in general. Organized labor is against NAFTA because they feel that it allows American jobs to be outsourced to Mexico. This isn't the case at all, however. American jobs are outsourced to Mexico because Mexicans will work for peanuts, Mexican business taxes are lower than U.S. business taxes, and environmental standards are lower or nonexistant.
The main problem with NAFTA is that most Americans don't know what it actually is. People hear that NAFTA allows companies to funnel jobs to Mexico, and assume that it's true, when it's simply not.
NAFTA is a good thing for Mexico and Canada, and good for America in small ways (like making it easier to put U.S. trash in Canadian landfills!), but overall the effect on the U.S. economy isn't very significant. What IS good for the U.S., though, is building Mexico into a G8 nation. |

Though, I don't know what kind of trade agreements we have with those guys... still, Mexico's a lot closer than all of those, so shipping from Mexico has got to be cheaper... you don't have to use boat or air travel to do it.
The sooner Mexico's economy takes off, the better. That's the best way to deal with illegal immigration: make it just as attractive to stay at home.
...even if it's done by feeding them Michigan's manufacturing jobs to save Texas and California's service jobs. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

I differ on one point: I think the best way to curb illegal immigration is to crack down HARD on American businesses who knowingly hire illegal immigrants... and unless that illegal immigrant has convincingly forged identification (highly unlikely), there is no way an employer could be unaware that their new hire was illegal. |

bah. whatever the solution is, you can forget about seeing any real effort to curb illegal immigration--by republican or democrat. _________________

Well, if we make it harder for them to find work here, then that's all the less we have to improve Mexico to make it attractive to go back home.
But what's stopping the companies from forging their employees ID for them? If it means cheap labor, who knows how far the company will go? _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck
