Whereas in BR1 every nonshooting scene is either wrenching or kitschy which are both awesome.

There's probably fine subtitles out there.

And mah boi I can tell you plenty about the Japanese films. (And probably more after my nihon film class next Fall! !!)

Watched one last night called Death Trance.

Couldn't figure out which part of the movie had a trance in it, there was some death though. That one annoyed me because all the subtitles that should have been in italics just had HTML tags around them.

Ahh, Suicide Club.

My av and sig are from the manga, I couldn't quite stomach the actual movie. But BR was pretty awesome. As was Moon Child, but I think that was just cause it had Gackt and Hyde in it, and I'm generally easy to please movie-wise.

I think the only movie I've ever truly hated and regretted seeing was that god-awful Eragon pos. The books were ok, but good god. I don't think that director even knew what character development was. "Oh hey, that guy that's been around fer a while just died. Who was he again? Wasn't he a main character in the book, with like... an emotional death? No way." /bitter.

Aww yeah Branded to Kill Bang Underworld Beauty was pretty good too.

How 'bout Kinji Fukusaku? He ended up doing Battle Royale but before that he was pretty strictly a yakuza director.

I was going to mention Fukusaku, but I was gonna save it for once were done being all sore about Battle Royale. Graveyard of Honor is a really great film, often overlooked in favor of things like the Yakuza Papers, but it's just as good. SF Public Library, out of all places, always seems to have a very good and varied stock of Fukusaku films whenever I visit.

Fukusaku's Blackmail is My Life is so good, and I loved Street Mobster. The only one I didn't really like is If You Were Young: Rage. His Mishima movie is good too.

I have trouble picking a favorite Japanese director because I like so many standalone movies. For instance, I'm not the world's biggest Shohei Imamura fan but I LOVE Vengeance is Mine because it IS one of the best movies ever. Same goes for Kurosawa and the Yojimbo brothers, too, if you wanna know the truth. And there are so many directors in Japan who just made one movie of note and nothing else, like the guy who did Shall We Dance?.

But I feel closest to Takashi Miike because I've seen a hefty chunk of his movies and liked most of them. I also know a ton about him... the Japanese director with the best record though is Hayao Miyazaki, hands down.

Another great director is Kihachi Okomoto, who made both Sword of Doom and Kill!, two great samurai movies staring the impeccable Tatsuya Nakadai. He's so good.

And now I feel bad I don't know who Juzo Itami is.

Man, I've got to change my eating habits. Recently it's been "Eat nothing until between 7 and 10 o'clock and then snack regularly until 1 am".

Watch "Star Wars" or "A Fistful of Dollars" as introduction to Japanese film.
