Quote:
The Oklahoma Senate has unanimously approved a controversial violent games bill, HB3004, putting the "games as porn" bill one step closer to being signed into law. The House also unanimously approved the bill in March. Now the legislation will be sent back to the House for another approval, after which it will be placed on Democratic Governor Brad Henry's desk, awaiting his signature.

HB3004 seeks to amend an existing Oklahoma statute, and redefine what is considered "harmful to minors." Authored by State Rep. Fred Morgan (R), the bill would add "inappropriate violence" to the statute. In the actual wording of the bill, "harmful to minors" means: "the material or performance lacks serious literary, scientific, medical, artistic, or political value for minors." (But if Sony is going to have to demonstrate the serious literary, scientific, medical, artistic or political value of the latest Ratchet & Clank game, they may be in trouble.)

The effect of this legislation, if passed, would mean the Oklahoma government could designate certain games "inappropriate," and the games would then be treated like pornography—meaning it would be illegal for retailers to sell the game to minors. What makes the Oklahoma Senate's unanimous decision particularly significant is that similar bills in other states have been killed time and time again, because of the same vague wording of HB3004's definitions of "inappropriate."

Game Politics states on their site that a well-placed source has indicated that Governor Henry would most likely be inclined to sign the bill. If that proves to be true, the IDSA could have a significant First Amendment legal battle on their hands.

I wouldn't have so much of a problem with this if things like movies and other mediums were applied. But video games are the sole target.

Bullshit. My state sucks.

Well, then sue the bastards. Plus, you'd get all of the video game companies on your side. (At least the governor's a Democrat... D's seem to be more on the "let it go" side of this sort of issue)

Very gay.

And for once, politically, it's not so bad to live in Michigan.

The THPS series "lacks serious literary, scientific, medical, artistic, or political value". Does this mean new THPS games are going to be banned for minors? Neutral

Fuck Oklahoma, is what I say. Wink

At least it's not as bad as the Alien and Sedition acts!

Okay, so maybe that wasn't a good joke. And out of all honesty, I don't understand why all this fuss is being generated over something of which parents always have had control! In fact, I don't really know why the state can determine what's appropriate or not for my viewing. Is some person who's 17 years and 364 days old any less ready to watch porn as someone born a day before her? Sure, maybe a ten year old isn't, but why would a ten year old have interest in sexual behavior to begin with?

If I lived in Oklahoma, I'd be genuinely offended by the law. It's my job (and sometimes my parents... only sometimes) to decide what's appropriate for me. A bunch of old monsters in some legislative chairs who I never had a chance to elect do not constitute my ethical compass. I won't consent to any government that I can't participate in.

He's a very SOUTHERN Democrat. He's more conservative than most democrats. Oklahoma is a predominently conservative state, we had a higher percentage of votes for Bush in the 2000 election than Texas did.

And party affiliation really has nothing to do with it. Hillary Clinton and Joeseph Liberman are both very anti-video games.

True, but I was making a sweeping generalization, is all. Well, you can always throw them that case where they found that of kids shooting a gun for the first time (safely and all), kids that played Doom were tons more accurate than kids that hadn't played it. And that's only one example.

Well, luckily, I don't think PA's going to enact a bill like this anytime soon. I guess Oklahoma was tired of having people from age 18 to 35 living in it.

Are you a minor that wants to buy an M/AO game in Minnesota?

All you have to do is pay $25 more than non-minors!

Now who is exploiting America's youth using filth?

And does that mean they'll stop selling AMerica's Army? The game sold by the U.S. government as a recruiting aid?
