The unemployed computer programmer is now battling extradition to the United States, where, if found guilty, he faces up to 70 years in jail and fines of up to $1.75 million. His lawyer fears he could even be sent to Guantanamo Bay

No big deal. This sounds like another case of someone with very little to lose in life deciding to leave with a bang instead of a whimper.

In this case, his "bang" was tweaking the nose of the grouchy tyrannosaurus rex that is the NSA and government security in general these days. He knew what would happen, and I'm sure he won't be dissappointed.

Why is it necessary for a democratic republic to have secret government files?

Well, there could be, say, militaristic plans, nuclear secrets, etc. Some things should be classified. Not everything, but some.

Hidden from it's own citizens, the ones who constitute the authority of the government?

It's the same way a company keeps their operational strategies secret. And the nuclear stuff should be classified cus, who knows, Timothy McVeigh could've used a nuke.

I wish he would have actually said what all he found. What a letdown.

Nations have to keep certain information secret for the sole reason that if it were all free, like Mavhunter alluded to, there are way too many people with bad intentions and all kinds of time on their hands to exploit that information.

"WMDS!!!! ZOMG!"

"I am not a crook."

People are liars, I dunno. With some people, we just can't always do the right thing.
