From top to bottom:
the red one- Shigoto (Job/work, probably should have used アルバイト or arubaito which means part-time job)
the green one- Benkyo (study, schoolwork)
the blue one- Gitaa Puro (Guitar Pro)
the one under that- Supaa Famicom (Super Nintendo)
the purple one- Bya Bya Bya (the way one of my teachers says/writes bla bla bla) _________________

so you getting this shit together with like lessons and stuff? I'm real horrible with languages except for basic things, so that's a 'right on!' to you for being good at this. _________________

I've said this to my Japanese teacher, and I'll say it again:
Arubaito is not even close to part-time job. |

I've never said this to anyone but:
uh yeah it totally is. It's in every dictionary and I've used the word while talking to a number of Japanese people who all understood what I was talking about.

Well...no, that's not exactly what I meant. I know it's an official word, but I just don't see the connection between itself and what it means. It's katakana, so it should sound kinda like the phrase it came from. |

I think I must be missing something here. I don't speak Japanese, so my pronunciation might be a bit off, but it looks like it sounds quite a bit like the word it came from (in a language I do pretend to speak, no less). Unless you're implying that it doesn't sound much like the English phrase "part-time job," which is true, but doesn't seem all that relevant. _________________ Married to Terri.

The fuck? Was there a huge influx of germans into japan or something? Arbeit is german for work. |

OK JAPANESE LESSON.
I understand what hrrnet is saying now, although I think I can solve the issue. Katakana as we know it today is used entirely to write words from other languages. アイスクリーム or aisukuriimu is ice cream, and so forth. So his confusion over the fact that "arubaito" sounds nothing like "part-time job" makes good sense.
But not all katakana is for English words, and yes, arbeit is German for work. _________________
