For those of you who haven't heard, tomorrow, May 1st, is the day planned by many groups of immigrants to skip school and work to show everyone what the world would be like without immigrants. Not exactly how many people actually are going to do this, as some are afraid they will lose their jobs. My school has already warned people not to take part in it by skipping. Comments? |

Oh, I've heard about this. It won't really be affecting me, since I don't go anywhere on mondays.
Actually, I was listening to Michael Graham (on the readio) a few days ago. He said it'd be nice for once to go to a Dunkin Donuts and talk to someone whose first language was English. He said he'd get a dozen donuts for the novelty of it. A dozen donuts, one at a time! It's horrible, yet so funny.
Anyway, if people are willing to risk their jobs, it's fine with me. I'm not really up to date with the whole illegal immigrant issue, but if people want to work so badly they should at least do it legally. I can understand the support your family thing, but seriously. You want in our country, you follow our rules, bitches. |

I don't have anything against the guys personally, but they are "illegal" immigrants for a reason... _________________

I agree. I myself am of Mexican heritage. People who come in this country illegally should strive to become U.S. citizens. It's not fair they come here and work, but not become citizens. _________________ MY BARF is TASTIER than Yours!!!

Am I the only one who gets the suspicion that they don't have all the public relations savvy they might need when they're coming up with ways to make their case?
I mean, what happens when America un-cringes halfway through the day and says "Hey, this ain't so bad!" A one-day walkoff won't hurt anything. The only way it could make significant waves is if migrant farm workers quit for a significant period of time. Then farmers would have to hire legal Americans and have to pay them a respectful wage, and pass the price-hike on to the rest of us.
Are you willing to pay three bucks for an apple? If you think it could never happen, your next trip to the gas station might change your mind.
As jerk-headed as it might seem, I can feel what the guy in Otogi-san's quote was sayin'. _________________

Not all apple farms, etc. are picked by illegal immigrants, you know. We have several large farms in western Virginia that deliver to us and even sell straight from the trees ("you pick em yourself, lazy!") and it's not $3 an apple. _________________

Um, yeah. It was an example, Mavhunter. I wasn't talking specifically about apples. Sorry I didn't make that clear. _________________

From what I've heard, the school skipping is discouraged since it has no real bearing on the economy. It's possible they're just trying to find a reason to skip en masse (like senior skip day). |

I was talking with my principal and he said they lose money because of all of the inconveniances and extra paper work, and no school lunch money, etc. |
