I assert that the stubbornness of the United States and some other English speaking countries (but especially the US) will eventually force the rest of the world to adopt English as a second language.

Nah. I think, with language as it is, it will all eventually merge into one. I mean, hell, white guys say "homie" and crap like that. _________________

Chinese, not English will become the new lingua franca. We don't stand a chance in the next twenty years. They're making tons of business around the world, and we're starting to lose markets. |

Don't count on it. They may be getting bigger, but the US and China still have a big business relationship, and they're learning English to talk to us. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

I doubt it.
I mean French was the international language for a while a few years back. Same with English. It'll fade away as another empire rises. |

"Fuck it," as the US seems to be saying to 2nd languages, the metric system and more, is working out pretty nicely for us I think. _________________

Chinese could give English a run for its money. China has waaay more people who are willing to do more work for less money than any English-speaking group.
Add to that the fact that however justified (or not) we think our military actions overseas, there are peoples around the world who are becoming more reluctant to trust Americans. Maybe this will hurt us financially, maybe not. But what will hurt us is the attitude that many Americans have that the world owes them something just for existing. Surviving ain't enough: They want the 3.5 kids, pay $5 for a cup of coffee every day on the way to the office, live in a ranch-style house and drive a big uterus on wheels. Not all Americans have this, but deep down, many of them do.
From what I've seen, this is nearly opposite of the Chinese perspective on things: Bust your butt working from an early age and maybe you'll have a couple luxuries in life but maybe not and that's how life is. Hell, even American companies realize this: Why do you think jobs get shipped overseas? Because the job force in America demands too much "respect".
This divide could change how the world does buisness. America could lose some of its reputation as the golden beacon of light and hope, and other countries will start doing business in, say, Chinese, rather than English. _________________

Tell me this, would you enjoy sweatshop labor? I disagree with you anyway. The American labor force has been pretty docile about worker's rights since 1920. You really don't see stuff like Pullman or Haymarket anymore around here. |

You're right, Mr. American. It's all about what you enjoy, isn't it?
Sorry, man, but I don't even see how that applies to what I said.
Anyway, it's not about the prospect of Americans working in sweatshops. That's the thing: Americans will never do anything like that, we'll make sure of that.
Other groups though, they're more willing to work something closer to sweatshop conditions for lesser pay.
Chinese is harder to learn, though, so we're okay. _________________

The United States are not going to last as the most powerful nation on Earth.
You're going to have to face that as fact. China looks set to kick your arses any minute.
As a foriegner and spectator, I can't wait for this! _________________
