because there's been so much discussion of it in the ministick (well, sean, dan, and myself D:) why not an entire thread?

do you hate anime? love it? think it's overrated? watch it like a person obsessed?

personally, i think that parts of it are wonderful. i just like the stories--i'm not saying all of them are different from american animation, but a lot of the time the plots are more dramatic, more violent, more brainy. you don't always get that.

i've watched a bunch of hayao miyazaki and smatterings of series, but my first "real" anime was FLCL, and honestly, i think i would've hated anime if my first had been something like, say, inuyasha. i fucking hate inuyasha.

The plots tend to be good in some of them and the art style can be O.K. when it's not insanely Cheezie. I guess I only like it because it goes with RPGs.

Working at EB has shown me some scary, scary anime. This guy came in Friday with one with a gun-wielding nun and one called "Super Gals". Ew.

I have it all on DVD.
I've been meaning to devote like 12 hours to watching the whole thing in one sitting, but... hasn't happened yet.

ah. that's 26 eps, right? i just remember i saw a few of the first episodes but before that i saw a clip of one with roger saying "the tomatoes..." i have a feeling if you explain it it would be totally spoilerific, but it fascinated me. it keeps going on and off adult swim though. :/

i've sat through flcl marathons, but that's 6 episodes and just short 3 hours so that doesn't really count...

and seansy, 'course that counts. <3

Yugiou was my first shounen anime. And I still play the TCG to this day. Devastated.

Other than that, I haven't watched much until recently. I subscribed to Shonen Jump when it was announced, so I mostly read the manga.

As far as anime movies go, Akira and Metropolis were really good.

And of course, I am loving Bleach. I've watched half of the episodes that are out in under a week. Exclamation

It's overrated, but there's still some good stuff in it.

I'm a closet fan of the Dragon Ball series, myself, although as you'd imagine, I much prefer the manga over the series (the series I really only watch for a 'great laugh' and nostalgia). Akira Toriyama's art style is awesome, probably my favourite manga artist out of the whole lot of them.

Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies were all great movies. Downloaded Howl's Moving Castle recently, too - should probably watch some of that shit.

Did they ever make Dr. Slump into an anime? I'd totally watch that.

Yeah, me too. I don't think they did, though, but I could be wrong.

Miyazaki is awesome.
Gundam is awesome.
Dragon Ball and DBZ without the horrible english dub is awesome.

A select few are awesome the rest suck.

That's a pretty huge generalization, seeing as how there are tons of different anime series.
