Mine's a tie between 61 Revisited and Bringing It All Back Home. A real, real close tie.

One one hand you've got your quintessential acoustic songs: Mr. Tambourine Man, Gates Of Eden, It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), & It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. And THEN you've got great blues: Subterrenean and Maggie's.

But then Highway 61 has Like A Rolling Stone and Ballad Of A Thin Man and other great blues.

Oh, lord.

I guess the greater question here is: which is better: acoustic dylan or electric dylan?

I can't answer this question.

Because acoustically you have better lyrics with more meaningful themes and the chord progressions (especially in The Times They Are A-Changin') can be great.

But electrically, he has more vibe and much more loose and fun. Certainly The Times They Are A-Changin' seemed more prophetic and serious and uppity than Bringing It All Back. In the latter he seems much more human. Humane.

So back to the original question:

I think that Bringing It All Back Home is better.

Because first of all, he had the courage to go electric and he still kept his acoustic background. In 61 Revisited he only put in one song which wasn't all that different from the others. Indeed 61 seems to me like one big allusion to Mythical creatures and Western idols. He keeps on talking about Napoleon and Snow-White, etc.

Why does he like Napoleon so much?

Another good thing about Bringing It Back Home is that no two songs are very much alike (ignore Subterrenean Blues and Maggie's Farm, those two are almost exactly the same thing).

Another good question is about Dylan's later albums. Out of which I only take preference to Desire And Blood On The Tracks (barring all live versions and greatest hits).

I think Desire>Blood On The Trucks.

Bylan + gypsy violin = best combination ever. I seriously love every single note that violin groans. And Hurricane wouldn't be the same without it. At all. It's like trying to play All Along The Watchtower without a guitar solo. Impossible.

Definitely not by Dylan, though.

the beatles covers were also shit

but i dig the memphis bluesey covers of the beatles songs. i always said that mccartney's songs would be better if they were sung by old black men with guitars living on the streets of memphis!

I always said that McCartney's songs would be better if he didn't exist.

yes, but, think of the black men!

for example, the memphis all-stars' version of drive my car rocks.

you think they would have done much better with "yer blues", though Neutral
