Cannae was arguably the greatest tactical victory of all time, where 54,000 Carthaginians (mostly made up of mercenaries) defeated the largest Roman army ever fielded - sixteen legions and a total of about 86,000 men. Against the odds, Hannibal Barca used a masterful encircling technique which completely surrounded the legions and cut them down brutally. Hannibal lost about 16,000 men - the Romans over 60,000 - including 80 senators and 1 consul. This battle toll wasn't matched until the Somme.

The Romans lost a huge percentage of their soldiers against Hannibal over a few years, but as a result, became stronger and more hostile. They took over Iberia, Illyria and Macedonia within decades of this terrible defeat, and burned Carthage to the ground. Because of the Battle of Cannae, the biggest Roman defeat in history, the Romans managed to turn from a small Italian power to powerful conquerers.

This is a turning point in history that is often overlooked, however without Cannae Rome may have not realized their strength and hostility and therefore perhaps wouldn't have conquered Europe.
