You guys need to find better girls.
(Note, I had a lonely valentine's day following a painful breakup. But I'd never go out with someone that I could have a total falling out with.) |

You just aren't able comprehend it - it's definitely possible.
Not that I'm going through a complete falling out, but definitely going through some shit. _________________ here comes the big ideas again, just like they did before and then,

| I know it's possible. That's why I go for girls that are far more mature than I am. (Not age-wise, though I shouldn't have to specify that.) |

meh, I've had lonely Valentines Days since 2006 or somethin' like that.
Mostly through lack of trying, though.
But yeah Sharp, anything can go wrong in any relationship.... it's just a matter of probability what's going to go wrong first. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

Advice on external hard drives please?
Considering how cheap they are I want at least a 1TB. I've seen an Iomega brand in Best Buy and on Amazon. Overall the reviews are good but there've been some complaints about it shitting the bed. Any recommendations for specific models or brands? 'Twoud be appreciated. |

I have a 1TB Seagate, use it every day, and it has been running perfectly for over a year now. It was about a hundred bucks when I got it, the prices have probably come down. I intend on getting another pretty soon and setting them on autocopy, just to be safe. |

Most reliable brand for hard drives is Western Digital. Hands down.
Also, if you want to pay significantly less, go through an online store.
Oh, and if you're getting one to carry around with you, make sure you've got redundant copies of all of the files on it somewhere. Lots of moving parts in a hard drive, and even the slightest physical shock can send it six feet under... |

Failed spectacularly too, with all data lost. Click of death. Still don't know what caused it.
I wouldn't worry about branding, I'm pretty sure people have studied this and found that none of the brands are significantly more reliable than the others.
Just get the best deal you can... Newegg can probably fix you up with a cheap one. _________________ Come into my den let me hear you cluck

In my experience, seagate drives, mechanically, are very durable. They've gotten some bad press lately due to buggy firmware, affecting some 750GB, 1TB, and 1.5TB drives. I personally own 5 of the affected 1.5TB drives, and with updated firmware have not had any issues. I also have a 120MB seagate drive, which still works perfectly. Not that what they were making in the early 90s has much bearing on current quality. Of drives that I've had fail the majority were Maxtor drives, despite my owning more Seagate drives. Now that Seagate owns Maxtor, I can't imagine their quality being as poor as it used to be. I have owned comparatively few WD drives, but they have pretty much all died of bad blocks. As a side note, none of the one Samsung drives I have owned have ever failed. All of my Hitachi drives are going strong as well, but that is also a small sample size(only 3, and one is a pretty new 2TB model).
One thing which may help you is to look for a drive with a fall sensor. These are mostly found on 2.5" drives. The sensor will tell the drive to park the drive heads when the drive is dropped to avoid having them hit the platter. This only really matters if the drive is running when you drop it.
In short, it's a crap shoot. Though maybe I should ask what disks my old host used, since they were constantly having issues with their storage. There are a few specific model #s out there which may be nice to avoid(and you can tell which they are by the low ratings on newegg usually), but as far as brands go it makes little difference. _________________

i have a 500GB seagate, a 160GB lacie (not the porsche one), and a 1TB wd mybook... none of them have died for me and for the most part they've been pleasantly reliable. the mybook i've only had for about two months so i can't say much about its reliability, but the seagate has surprised me a bit, although it does seem a bit flakey and slow at times. the lacie i got almost four years ago now? i don't think i have nearly as many hours on that one though, since after i got the 500GB i thought of it as a backup of just my essential stuff. none of them have died on me and those are the only three hard drives i've owned. the computer support stuff i do doesn't work with a lot of externals, but i don't think i've seen enough of a pattern to say "this one fails the most".
i'd just think about how you're going to use it: my drives just sit on my desk, occasionally i'll bring them on long trips and over to a friend's to share data, etc., but all added up they move like, once a month.
and i'll second newegg as a chill place to buy electronics. _________________

I once fell in love with this girl who turned out to be totally insane (totally, hallucinate-the-Virgin-of-Guadeloupe-taking-away-her-voice-until-I-pray-to-the-virgin-and-ask-forgiveness, make-up-stories-of-miscarriages-after-we-broke-up insane) and I didn't see it coming. Worst falling out ever. |
