 If the American public was willing, they could make this NSA garbage largely useless.
All they'd have to do is start using VOIP (internet phone) instead of the regular phone system. I'm sure there are already privacy nuts working on PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption techniques that would make it statistically impossible for an agency to get a word from your phone calls.
At first, it would probably take a gouge out of the sound quality of the calls, but just like dodgy game console emulators, it would improve over time, even if it's not a big business.

yeah, there are problems with VOIP... if your connection's not highspeed and perfect, it sounds like complete crap and people can't understand you half the time.
