Well, the Dismemberment Plan was a band that traversed styles from edgy post punk, to goofy college rock, to melodic alternative rock, to smooth indie rock. And the Decemberists are a more of an indie pop group, with story-like songs and a mix of non-traditional instruments. They are both huge in the independent music scene, though.
