but I don't like the term "common law marriage" and wish there was some other term for it.

and while "gay marriage" doesn't bother me, it seems to be the crux of the issue for a lot of people...

that way, marriage can be a big ol' sacred ol' institution whatever, and "civil union" or some other term can be the common law part.

And then that way, churches can brazen it out amongst themselves if gay marriage harms "the sanctity" or not. In the mean time, gays and straights can incur the same legal benefits under one common term.
