if they drill safely, they may not have to displace that many animals.
And it'll reduce our dependence on foriegn oil
and gas prices will drop.

So yeah, you can be all eco-friendly now... but you may regret it later.

Yeah, permanently destroying a wildlife refuge and disrupting an entire ecosystem is definitely worth a few more years of oil. Devastated.

But seriously... what the hell? People actually support this? Wasn't this in the news like, five years ago, and people threw it out because of how absolutely fucking ridiculous it is? I mean, it's not even just about displacing animals; it's about uprooting an entire community. Building even just a road through a refuge like this can cause not only death and loss of important species, but also crazy speciation events that have massive long-term evolutionary consequences. Basically, if a 20 foot stretch of asphalt can do this, I am worrisome over a massive drill that has access to 1.5 million acres.

I've heard this before. The problem is that it isn't true. The U.S. currently consumes over 20 million barrels of oil a day. 58% of that is imported. At best, ANWR will yield 1 million barrels a day (actually, more like 875,000 at best, but I'll round up). Although this would be a significant increase in Alaskan oil production, it means very little in terms of overall U.S. oil consumption, even currently. Reducing our foreign oil consumption by 4-5% is not very significant, in my opinion. All numbers are from various Washington Post articles, in case you're curious.

And that's not even taking into account the environmental factors. It isn't worth it, at all.

The term "oil consumption" always makes me think of Hoggish Greedly from Captain Planet chugging a barrel of oil. Always.

Do you know how fucking ignorant that is!? Do you not care about air, water, land, or other types of pollution!? If we continue on this trend, the entire world'll be covered in smog, the poles and Greenland will melt (they already are), and we'll all become modern-day Atlantises.

We need to invest in something renewable, like nuclear fusion, hydrogen, or solar power, increase fuel efficiency in transportation, get pollution-spewing vehicles like SUVs off the road, and get corporations to create less pollution and use the stuff they do have as a reusable energy source!
