I think he just wants to upgrade, because it would be logical for him to start with a crappy intro-level guitar, and now be ready to move up.

If he wants to buy a new guitar, there's nothing wrong with that. I was just suggesting that there are other options. Wink

Oh, god yes. I just want a new guitar. Because, well, DJ was right. I have a crappy inrto level guitar, and I want to move up.

I ask because most likely your electronics are dirty and you can fix that yourself.

The tuning is a different issue. Yes, new strings. But also your neck may be getting warped. That can be fixed and would cost less than a new guitar. Also it could be an issue with your bridge... especially if it's suspended (wammy bar). These are simple adjustments an expert can do for you.

In other words, I think your teacher is probably wrong about the cause... I've never heard such an explanation before (doesn't mean it doesn't exist, though).

In my experience, some of this is not usually true. It's also kind of a moot point in this topic, though, so I don't think it's all that big a deal, especially since I agree with your two most basic points: first, that if you think you "need" a new guitar, you probably don't, assuming you actually like the guitar you have well enough to put money into it, and second, that most guitars should have a proper set up.

Back on topic, moreso, if you're looking for the LP/SG vibe, you might check out the LTD EC-400 and Viper 400 models (and the H-400), specifically the Duncan-equipped models. I believe they're being replaced with the 500 series this year, and I don't know what the price will be on those, but the non-EMG versions of the 400 series fall into your price range (and, incidentally, are currently on clearance at Musician's Friend). The lower-end LTD models rather suck in my opinion, but anything in the old 300 range or above is usually pretty great for the price.

Also, Sharp, isn't the EDS1275 like. . . $3000, easy? Anyway, if you must have an EDS1275 copy (and the Epiphone is also out of your price range), Agile makes a copy called the Valkyrie, and their guitars are an outstanding value for the money, with the understanding that you'll probably want to replace the pickups. In fact, you should probably give the entire Agile line a look.

Hardly. Wink

I've looked at a few guitars to suggest... but I don't know cow's style. Great stuff at Musician's Friend, though.

And me? I'm a bassist (see avatar).

Nice. I can't really say a lot of style, but I am a fan of some stuff the Beatles do, big fan of Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan. You'd have to look at my music on my computer to understand my style Razz

Physical style, I meant.

Sounds like you've got similar tastes as me, though. Someone around here has a sig with George Harrison in it. Lennon used a Rickenbacker. Clapton and Hendrix used Fender Strats, as did Pete Townsend (though I've always liked the Telecaster myself). Not sure about Dylan, since his good stuff was all acoustic.

But remember, the *sound* has as much to do with your amp (as well as the pickups, of course).
