they... already do. Maybe it's exaggerated 'cause I heard it from a republican source, but I'm pretty sure they cited it...
anyway, what I heard was, "America's wealthiest 5% pay 55% of all the country's taxes"
If you want to keep the rich from paying less than they're supposed to, shoot the accountants that find the tax loopholes... or close the loopholes. The rich are already supposed to be paying much more than their fair share.

that's true, so the top 5% SHOULD be paying about 45% of the nation's taxes. They pay 55%. What's the problem? Income tax is a great system... if you tax 10% of what someone earns, then the more they earn, the more they pay. It makes sense. What you seem to want is an exponential function so that the rich only get to keep 10% of what they make while the poor keep 90%.

In general that's not true, though. Sure, the top 1% pay 34% of all income tax (or did in 2003, which was the easiest data to find). I'd be crying a lot harder for them if they didn't control 38% of the wealth. Same with the top 10%, who pay 66% but control 71%. Since the top 5% falls somewhere in between those two, I would imagine a similar trend applies to their "55%" burden. More than their fair share?
Whatever, though. I'll try not to interrupt this meaningful and unique argument again, since these things never, ever end in a stalemate.

Any discrepancy is owing to tax loopholes. I agree that if they earn a million dollars, and they're supposed to pay a hundred thousand of it to the government, then they should have to pay a hundred thousand dollars. Stop giving random tax breaks and just do a standard percentage tax across the board.
And yes, I do find it perfectly acceptable for the rich to stay rich. They've earned the money somehow, or at least a smart relative has. Why shouldn't they be allowed to keep it? You want to keep the money you earn, don't you?

Yeah. I can't say I'm an advocate of the flat tax. Sorry. Anyway, like I said, we need more Mav on Dave action in this thread.
