Vote! In response to ZD's post that we don't discuss anything interesting.

Just a bag?

I was tempted to put "Jewish God" on there.

Hey Mav I don't actually think you're a douche.

well, the whole god and allah this is depending on who you ask: they all derive from the same traditions, but there are those crazy fucks who think that allah is not the same guy. like jack chick! he thinks that it was all based on a pagan god, and the early tribes were pagan, yes, but it really built off a lot of judeo christian ideas: a lot of the stories in the qur'an are those of jesus, joseph, jacob, abraham... there are differences though, in the stories, but i wouldn't say that allah was the moon god. jack chick has shit for sources. it all depends on who you ask. it's an issue of religious pluralism and all that theology. the christian/judaic god isn't quite up to debate so much because it was a much more direct derivation, but the gods of the old and new testament are very different in personality, if that counts for anything. old god: douche, new god: not so bad.

i don't really believe in god but i don't think i've fully admitted it to myself yet. despite never really believing in roman catholicism, i still feel this strange connection to the church. probably because when i was little and stuck in mass, bored out of my mind, right out of pointless stuff in ccd, i figured that nobody took it seriously, because i sure as hell didn't. somewhere in me that belief still holds despite being shown evidence to the contrary. if roman catholicism or any other highly organized dogmatic religion is bound together by a belief that it's all bullshit, then yeah, i could still think of myself as that.

i was told that i asked "why" too much in ccd and this annoyed my instructors. i only vaguely remember that. i never did the work, for one, and thought the religious movies they showed were terrible. the one thing i really vividly remember is bringing up the nicktoon the angry beavers as an example of something and then everybody saying they hated the show. Devastated.

in a more serious context, at one point i was interested in buddhism as a personal belief system, then i learned more about it and i was thinking, uh, no. the way it's interpreted in the states is highly liberal, but if you read into it in other ways it can be a very conservative faith. now i'm entranced by indian philosophy--like the bhagavad gita and the idea of karma yoga, acting without any mind to the result, living in the moment, and various other yogas... those are really cool and entrancing ideas, not to mention the whole self/universe divide.

in terms of the afterlife and understanding one's place in life, i tend to look to science more so than religion, but i don't think that a completely atheist life automatically leads to happiness and morality: it's possible, sure, but it's not about to be easy.

the tl;dr of it:
i have no clue what i believe, despite this, i am a religion geek, leading me to write unnecessarily long discourse about it. though maybe that's also because i'm tired.

wow, what a stupid poll, sorry mark, but those choices are shit.

do you honestly expect anyone here to devote themselves to Aztec paganism? why not just dub the Greco-Roman and Aztec choices as 'pagan'? that'd save room for more important religions - Shinto, Taoism, Zoroastrianism (well, maybe the latter isn't quite so important, but I think it is).

hell, I'm as boring as Fru - I haven't found my religion. I'm into a whole lot of them, but I can't pinpoint the one that connects to me the most.

all I know is that I'm theist, and it ends there.

also, mav, shiva isn't the only hindu god. shaivism is probably the most predominant form of hinduism in the indian subcontinent but there's a lot of other gods and things too.

really, the poll is kind of shit. doesn't have much to do with different ideas of god/deities found in different religions, either.

The Jewish God and Christian God are the same. The main difference between Judaism and Christianity is that Jews don't believe Jesus was the messiah, and they still keep kosher and all that.

Also I can't believe you didn't put Ásatrú, I so would have voted for that.

Gah, you all take things too seriously. Quetzalcoatl was a fucking joke when I put it up there. Nice to know that religion brings us all together.
